The Lake

In the depths of his alcoholism, he found a way back to the place where he’d once been happy….

I was born and raised in a small central Texas town about 35 miles north of Waco. The town’s population was and still is only a little over three thousand people. About twelve miles due north sits a large lake that I frequented often when I was young. It was an oasis to me as a boy, an escape from reality, if you will. Early on in grade school I made three lifelong friends with whom I remain friends with to this day. I have fond memories with these guys and of the lake. Most our spare time was spent out near the lake’s limestone bluffs, where we camped, hiked, played and grew up. It was peaceful, but at the same time fun and exciting.
