Returning home from war was tough, and getting sober and busy in AA was just the mission he needed
When I was 13, I went to work on a farm where I soon became friends with my boss, who was 21. He’d occasionally offer beers after we finished bringing in the hay in the hot sun. I felt all grown up to have a beer with adults. The first time I got drunk was at his bachelor party. Even though I crashed a car early in the evening, I still had to be at work at midnight to help milk a herd of 300 dairy cows.
