The writer of “Tugboat Willy” saw something in Captain Andy. Andy was sober, friendly and everybody loved him. Andy was also useful, and Willy could see his joy in that. Andy also knew about boats, which didn’t hurt either. But the thing Willy noticed most was how much joy and peace Andy had being sober. “I was amazed how this man lived his life,” he writes.
