The writer of ”In the Right Place” uses the example of returning a shopping cart to illustrate his emotional sobriety (or lack of) as a sober alcoholic. Do we do the right thing when no one’s looking? In his case, it was cold and raining. After a minute, he reasons, “My spirit can take rain and cold. It doesn’t do well with ducking responsibility or taking the softer and less human choice.” He puts the cart back.
