With Tolerance & Love

Tolerance was the key to our relationship. She and I developed “key words” to help us. When there was tension, Karen could say, “Hot chocolate.” That was my clue to call my sponsor.

My wife initiated the intervention that landed me in treatment, but she didn’t come to “family day” while I was there. However, she did go to Al-Anon once a week after I got out. When I picked up my 90-day chip, she declared herself a success, stopped going to Al-Anon, and wrote a master’s level paper on how to stop your husband from drinking. I was astounded. My sobriety was my responsibility, not hers. Amazingly, I didn’t react because that was her bragging, not mine—tolerance in action.
