My Journey From Cancer

Her illness made her life unmanageable. Where had she heard that before?

I’ve been sober since 1982—long enough, I like to joke, that I have bad decades. Life for me in sobriety has been an up and down journey filled with good things and not so good things. Some of the latter include my father passing away, a long-term relationship ending, jobs coming and going and old friends leaving (though new friends came). My life was pretty much an ordinary one as a recovering person—attending meetings, praying and meditating, working the Steps, sponsoring and being sponsored. Then in March 2018, I was diagnosed with stage 3, later upgraded to stage 4, lung cancer.
