Katie And My Story

Helping a friend take her first steps toward AA sometimes means “doing what we can do and then turning it over”

Early in December a number of years ago, I was messaging with a dear friend online. We were remembering Christmases we had shared during our “partying” days. We had lived together in an apartment more than nearly 40 years ago, a stone’s throw from Main Street in a northern New York village. She was a “townie” and I was an older college student. It was an unusual combination from many points of view. We would often go out the window, sit on the porch roof and “menace” people walking past, which makes me imagine that Katie’s Rooftop Tavern had a great deal to do with our friendship.
