The Man in Dakar

I jumped from my seat. I demanded that we didn’t need AA. I remember feeling embarrassed after my tirade because he just continued to speak politely.

In 1985, I was a teacher at a Christian academy in Senegal, West Africa. A couple of years before I went to teach there, I had become involved with a church and I was able to stop drinking. I thought my religious state of mind was all I needed in order to stay sober. God did many wonderful things in my life in spite of me. Yet I found myself restless, irritable and most discontent.
