It was the summer of 1983 and I had been sober for nearly three years. I
thought I knew everything about AA -- I had read all the books and would quote them at
people in meetings. I had taken my friends’ advice and stayed out of relationships for a year – after figuring out why they recommended that by getting in and out of a few bad ones. I had been in college but was on summer break. For the first time since I had gotten sober, I wasn’t in school and I didn’t have a job. I was at loose ends.
