Friday nights meant sushi—and joyful sobriety

I was 23 when I attended my first AA meeting. My heart threatened to leap out of my chest with every step I took towards the large stone walled building of the sober club. Self-doubt threatened to overwhelm me, but my feet persisted and I found myself in a darkened meeting room, lit only with candles. Would the faces around me be able to tell that I’d only been sober for a few weeks?! I quickly scanned the room to see if there were any women there, but I was the only one. The men were welcoming and offered me a place to sit.
