His alcoholism was like a shooting star, raging brightly but briefly

I started drinking when I was 13. I was born into a good family in a rural town of 35,000. I was smart and precocious and preferred the company of adults or to be alone over the company of other children. My asthma and chronic sinus problems were badly controlled, resulting in me having little athletic ability and “talking through my nose.” At best, I was an odd little boy.
