Home from a Grateful Dead tour to start college, she spun way out of control with liquor and drama. It was time to stop

I always knew I was different. Of course, my mom told me I was loved. But I was unplanned and, in my mind, unwanted. To add to the trouble, I had a severe case of dyslexia and dyscalculia. I couldn’t read or write numbers. Though I was far from unintelligent, I knew how messed up I was. Eventually I was blessed to learn how to read through my own bullheadedness and the care of a persistent teacher. After spending years in a special-ed program, I managed to fight my way to be included in regular classes.
