I was a functioning black-out drunk. By that I mean I could pull up to the toll both at one end of the bridge and demand, “Fill it up.” Fortunately the toll-taker thought I was teasing him. Once I was pulled over and made to sleep it off in the parking lot. That was in the late seventies when a DUI was much harder to obtain. There were hundreds of times I could have been busted, but it never happened. I guess my God was saving me for something different.
