I never understood self-pity until I had sixteen years of sobriety. I thought self-pity was what other people did—felt, had—when things didn’t turn out the way they wanted. Seeing self-pity in others seemed easy enough. However, I did not realize that my entire way of being in the world was underpinned by self-pity.
