A mother finds joy again in a family tradition her drinking had scared away

Every October, I think about ghosts. They are happy ghosts, most of them, wispy memories of holidays and joyful times. When the first gusts of fall come, I’m uplifted, amazed by a world as beautiful today as it was in my youth.
