Real AA?

A member shares his thoughts about people who claim there’s a right and wrong way to do the program

I’ve noticed a common theme in some people’s AA stories lately. They tell this version of things: When I first came to AA, the message I heard was diluted and so I didn’t stay sober. I focused on fellowship and meetings (the wrong things), instead of the real things, such as God or the Steps, which would actually keep me sober. And so I was miserable and/or drank again and/or blew up my life in some way. But luckily the miracle happened and I  heard the real AA message and I’m now able to carry a true message instead of that fake and diluted message I heard before. The implications are: AA is becoming weaker over time and so newcomers are less likely to hear the right or real message of recovery that the founders intended. I hear this from the podium a lot.
