Talking to Air

Grief, resentment and liquor soured him with God, but a new perspective on prayer changed his mind

Having been raised as an Irish Catholic, as well as an altar boy and a potential seminarian, I was infused early on with a solid belief in God. But when my drinking started at 14 my spiritual beliefs began to move in a new direction—to the distilled type from a bottle. Alcohol gave me a freedom much different than I felt in church. As was expected of a lad my age, I continued to attend church, but my interest was waning.
