My First Spiritual Experience

I hear a lot of people struggle with Step Three. I struggled with it as well. When I got to the end of the ABCs in “How It Works” in our Big Book, I realized I was ready for the Third Step. As I read on, I saw all sorts of stuff about self-will and trying to control the show and other people. I felt that didn’t apply to me, so I moved forward until I got to the suggested Third Step Prayer. When I looked over the Prayer, I saw the words “Thou,” “wilt” and “Thee”—all too biblical for me, but the next paragraph had a loophole that saved me. It said the wording was quite optional as long as we expressed the idea, voicing it without reservation.
