When a small island becomes a haven of hope and sobriety

Over a decade ago, when my US work visa expired, I departed California with just three months of sobriety under my belt. Back on my childhood island, Curaçao, traditional recovery programs were nonexistent. There was only a single, cramped AA meeting that could barely squeeze in 15 people. Coming from Los Angeles, a city overflowing with AA support, the lack of resources here was overwhelming. Those early days were brutal.
