Rain, Mud, Sobriety
I had just celebrated two years of sobriety in autumn of 1989, and my beloved partner was sober four months longer than me. I decided the two of us needed to go away on a vacation. We were both working and paying our (separate) rents without much to spare. My partner was reticent, but agreeable. I found a deal on a flight: six nights with buffet breakfasts and three dinners at a resort in Cancun for less than $450 each. So I made reservations and we headed out in October for a grand sober time. We didn’t know that October is the rainy season in Cancun. I certainly hadn’t investigated it. When we heard about it on the flight we said, “How bad can it be?”
