I often say I shouldn’t be here. Not in some dramatic, self-pitying way, but in the quiet recognition that alcoholism doesn’t run in my family. I didn’t grow up with any awareness of Alcoholics Anonymous, and I certainly didn’t know that there was an actual solution to the constant churn inside me—the irritability, the restlessness, the discontentment that made the world feel off-kilter even on my best days.
