Thin Ice

With God’s grace I got sober in Minnesota 32 years ago. My first months of sobriety were earned during the coldest and darkest parts of the northern winter. When I was new in AA, like many people, I could not even begin to identify or wrap my head around the idea that someone could not drink for 10, 20, or even 32 years! I was much more in awe of the people who were picking up 30- or 60-day chips. How could they do that? I had to drink every single day, and when I tried to stop I couldn’t. Those 30-day folks gave me hope that I could maybe, just maybe, quit.
