My sponsor introduced me to AA service and Twelfth Step work very early in my sobriety. Together we answered Twelfth Step phone calls, day or night, brought newcomers to meetings, kept them company after meetings and brought people to detox, then picked them up. This was in the late 70s, and things were different then. There were very few rehab or other treatment options, no special interest meetings, no women’s meetings and certainly fewer women in AA.
