As he mourned his son's death, he resisted the urge to drink again

For the first few years of sobriety, I had white-knuckled my way through my day, wanting sobriety just a little more than wanting a drink. I knew that without the words that AA had taught me, "Don't take that first drink, not ever, no matter what," I would be crazy, in prison or dead. However, I had no idea that even after years of AA experience a tragedy would show me the full extent of my belief.
