An AA sober for 50 years looks back

At age 19 or 20, I realized I had a problem with alcohol, and possibly with drugs also, but I was in the army at the time and I reasoned that the army was the cause, and I thought that if I returned to civilian life, I would be able to drink in a civilized manner. That didn't work and my drinking got worse.
