Less to Engrave

She thought people would get a chuckle from her gravestone epitaph, “I Quit,” not realizing it was the legacy of her life.

Shortly after I stopped drinking and came into AA, I was tasked with making a list of all the jobs I ever quit. Excluding day labor, I counted 110. This revelation led my sponsor and me to retrace my steps along a string of dead-end roads. At the end of each road a sign was posted: I QUIT. Little League football (twice); high school (three times); marriage (three times); work (three and a half times a year); and the list goes on. I first started quitting drinking in 1980. My last one was on Jan. 10, 2002.
