For a lifelong pessimist and atheist, AA's idea of a Higher Power brought him a new peace and serenity.
For me, a lifelong pessimistic, atheist/miserablist, who drank his way into alcoholism, coming to believe, even in the most modest way, was such a powerful part of my recovery. I can’t claim that I believe in God for sure now, but I definitely have some kind of Higher Power.
