Ultimately, her alcoholism led her to a better life

Ten years ago sometime around the 9/11 terrorist attack, I called the AA Hotline in Atlanta, Ga., and got quick advice to go to an AA meeting as soon as I could. They directed me to a group in a place called Clarkston, about 20 miles northeast of the downtown area. No one was in my life at that time and I felt very much alone in my world. I knew about the 9/11 event but felt disconnected from all that was going on ... lost in an inebriated abyss.
