May 2013: Letter from the Editor

When I came into AA, I thought my life was over. I was sure I’d never have fun again. But luckily, I soon learned that this was not true. The Big Book says, “Your imagination will be fired. Life will mean something at last. The most satisfactory years of your existence lie ahead.” This month, our special section features stories by AA members who have learned to really enjoy life again—sober.

Grilling, bonfires, tubing and smoothies—nothing is off limits for the sober outdoor fellowship crew who call themselves “The Happy Campers.” A California man’s quest to go to meetings in every state in the U.S. is the subject of “50 Preambles.” A DJ who almost lost his career to alcohol gets his groove back for an adventure of a lifetime. “Look Out for Two Old Ladies” is a story about two sober girlfriends who meet every year for long-distance shopping adventures, photo shoots with monkeys and, yes, 3 a.m. bologna sandwiches! And in “Best Deviled Eggs in Memphis,” a member enjoys improving his favorite recipes—one AA meeting at a time.
