April 2013: The Escape Clause

A newcomer thinks he dodged a bullet on doing service. Think again

When I came into the rooms four and a half years ago, I actually followed suggestions and looked for opportunities to do service. When my Grapevine rep commitment ended, I happened to hear an intergroup rep at a meeting announce that Bridging the Gap (BTG) was looking for volunteers, so I went to the next BTG business meeting. I was 11 months sober.

When I got there, I knew nobody in the room. I had never been to one of those meetings. I heard about various positions that were needed. Then the chairman looked at me. He asked if I was willing to be of service, and I said yes, but that I only had 11 months. He asked if I would be the mens’ phone coordinator, and I said sure. Then he slid a small booklet across the table, and I read the job description.
